Bill & Barbara Spencer, Windrose Farm
In 1990, when Barbara and Bill Spencer bought land in an idyllic valley, they didn’t foresee it becoming an iconic entity. Over the years, the Paso Robles property, the Windrose Farm brand and the couple themselves have come to represent an unwavering commitment to healthy and sustainable ecosystems.
“Windrose Farm” produce has graced the menus of top restaurants locally and in Los Angeles, so it’s ironic that the Spencers consider themselves “accidental farmers.” Barbara’s sensitivity to chemicals prompted them to plant a little organic garden, which set the couple’s course as passionate ambassadors of that methodology.
“As we began growing with organic systems, it was so clearly different,” they remember. “The most exciting aspect was the change in the habitat on the farm.
Every year we had new varieties of birds, and so many bees! It was as though all the creatures knew this was a safe place.”Recently, the Spencers upped that game by transitioning beyond organic to biodynamic practices. It’s not surprising, given their penchant for being ahead of the curve, and bringing the rest of us along with them.
As for the future of Windrose Farm, they “are working with a team of wonderful young people, and we dream of having it continue and evolve. It is such a special place, and we want it to continue to be shared with the community as a place to learn about growing and sharing wonderful food. Windrose should be all about growing good food and good people.”
