Food for Thought: Celebrating Our Golden Jubilee

A Letter from Managing Editor Aja Goare

Any special moment in life deserves a memorable bite to eat and a glass with which to cheers. After exchanging vows, my husband and I cut into the Madonna Inn’s famed pink champagne cake before theatrically wiping icing on one another’s faces (a very small amount — one does not waste this immaculate dessert). At the celebration of life for a dear friend who passed away in 2024, we shared memories and tears while digging into Nick’s favorite Cruise cake, a white chocolate vanilla Bundt cake with coconut shreds (made famous by actor Tom Cruise, who gifts them to friends during the holidays). Even smaller life moments like completing a big project at work, scoring a point in the intramural kickball league or finishing taxes call for an edible milestone marker.

This issue is our 50th — which coincides with my fifth year as Managing Editor — and we have a lot to celebrate.

Managing this magazine has added so much color to my life. Our talented contributors bring to these pages not only exceptional work, but vibrant personality and heart. Each one of our writers, photographers and illustrators is passionate about their community and genuine in their love for bringing people together around the table. Like a potluck, we all have something unique and rich to share with one another. I know I speak for us all when I express my gratitude for our Publisher Gail Cayetano for fostering the warm, inviting space for this community to grow.

Overused the adage may be, but it really does take a village. The hospitality industry as a whole is one great big village of people who love to serve, receive, make and gather. The pages of this issue are a testament to that. Whether it’s the culinary creations of Chef Rachel Ponce, who marries craft cocktails with scrumptious dishes; or the art of making sushi at local staple Goshi; or the stylist-chef-photographer dream team who produced our Hanukkah spread; or our contributors sharing their personal holiday traditions, this issue is sure to fill your cup. It certainly did for me.

One more note before I sign off: I’d be remiss not to mention the supporters we have in you, our dear readers. You inspire us to seek out new stories from diverse backgrounds in unfamiliar areas with neighbors we have yet to meet. Your support lifts us up, like the holiday spirit of carolers in Elf. With the New Year upon us, we wish you all happiness, health and prosperity in the year ahead.

Cheers!
