Delicious Hummus, Gyros Mark Hidden Gem Along Highway 1

Creamy house-made hummus and gyro wraps are now within reach (or at most, a quick drive) for residents and visitors in San Simeon. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the iconic Hearst Castle is the new Kabob House food truck, off Highway 1.
Owner George Bisili creates the standout dishes using his family’s traditional recipes, always ensuring fresh ingredients are used in abundance.
Sharing these beloved, reasonably priced foods throughout San Luis Obispo County was George’s motivation for starting the truck, and he’s stayed true to his motivators. Kabob House has quickly become a favorite for locals who welcome the new dining option along the short strip of California coastline that makes up San Simeon, a town called home by fewer than 500 residents.
Savory, richly spiced meals like plates of falafel (smashed chickpea fritters) or the beef and chicken shawarma (a classic dish of seasoned meats placed vertically on a spit and slow-roasted), come with an assortment of sides: rice, vegetables or, a personal favorite, the incredibly flavorful tzatziki (strained yogurt and cucumbers, olive oil, garlic, salt, lemon juice and an assortment of green herbs). To contrast the tzatziki is the delicate, whipped texture of the hummus, a spread made from ground chickpeas and sesame seeds, lemon, garlic and olive oil. Here, it is always homemade.
There’s also the opportunity to indulge in the gyro fries, which are loaded with meat and the creamy tzatziki. Each of the gyro wraps is made up of either falafel or meat with crunchy vegetables in a delicate, warm pita. Adding on a sweet wedge of baklava is highly recommended to complete the meal.
The truck can be found in front of San Simeon Liquors on the corner of Pico Ave and Highway 1, just across from Pico Creek Beach. It’s open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
George hopes to secure a place in Cambria so his fresh fare can be offered to the community even more days each week.
